Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Uterine fibroids are benign growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. While the condition is common for many women, the size and location of the fibroids can lead to problems including pain and heavy or prolonged bleeding. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is an interventional procedure in which a catheter is inserted to embolize or block the arteries in order to block the supply of blood to fibroid tumors. The reduced or blocked blood supply to the fibroid tumors causes the tumors to shrink, thereby reducing pain and bleeding.
